New to Soundfly? All of our mentored online courses come with six weeks of one-on-one professional support and feedback on your work. It’s like having a personal trainer, but for music! Whether you’re interested to dive deep into a topic covered by one of our courses, like Unlocking the Emotional Power of Chords, Songwriting for Producers, or The Creative Power of Advanced Harmony, or just to work with a Mentor directly to achieve a specific goal, we can help you get there.
This course is for producers and DAW users who have no trouble generating ideas, but tend to veer off track and spend all their creative energy on the production, leaving the actual song behind too early in the process. It’s also for any non-professional songwriters (musicians, composers, synthesists) who produce music at home, but lack structure in their process. The course is genre-agnostic, but is best suited for those who lean heavily on their computer to make music.
When Houston’s song focuses on notes 1, 3, and 5, it’s focusing on the notes that rank highest in what music theorists call the “tonal hierarchy.” Hughes describes it as such: “The tonal hierarchy is this idea that certain notes are sort of more important than others.” In the major key, we generally talk about four levels of note importance.

I’ve been a fan of singer Haco’s strange vocal work for years, having discovered her somewhat obscurely through her band Hoahio. Paradise of Replica is the second and final studio record by her avant-garde pop group, After Dinner, and it’s pretty spectacular in every way. They gained a lot of international attention with this release and toured Europe on its critical acclaim. Once again, here’s an album that never really went out of vogue for people in the know but is definitely seeing a popular resurgence in listening.
I tend to use a faster attack, but I’m not crushing those transients with a ton of compression, so I still keep the dynamics in my mix. If I found I was killing the transients too much and there was no excitement in my mix, I would probably make it a slower attack setting.
Try to be creative with your promotions. The perfect solution or combination of marketing strategies to get fans out to a show doesn’t exist, so don’t be afraid to try out innovative ideas, even if they might fail. You’ll learn from what goes wrong and increase your understanding of what it takes to put on a successful show in your music market.

Gorgeous though the chaconne is, my enjoyment has been hampered by my inability to figure out the rhythm. All classical performers insist on doing extremely expressive (read: loose) timekeeping. I don’t have the sarabande rhythm internalized well enough to be able to track it through everybody’s gooey rubato. Bach’s rhythms are complicated enough to begin with. He loves to start and end phrases in weird spots in the bar (the very first note of the piece is on beat two) — so, I needed some help finding the beat.

We took inspiration from the concept of crowdfunding indeed. We realized that, in many ways, the best way to help artists fund their projects was to call out their community. Today, fans like to get involved in the music they love, and they want to actively support artists. Musical projects count for 10 to 20% of all crowdfunding projects in France. In the United States, 20% of the Kickstarter projects that reach their objective are musical projects.
With the advent of systems like the Kemper Profiler and Fractal Audio AX-8, many guitarists are making use of amp simulators instead of using the real thing. Even some of the most well known bands are using them live and in the studio.
I also recommend looking for an amplifier with an open back if possible, since you’re going to need strength in the mid-range tones and not obfuscate the natural lows. Here are some of my favorite choices for the blues:
Sure, total streams are a factor in determining your payout from streaming services. But assuming you’re among the vast majority of artists who aren’t quite making the big bucks from streaming royalties (or not yet, at least!), it’s much wiser to focus on quality over quantity.
