Pope Joy Hall houses many international acts. It’s the one place where you can see Irish dance, A Tribute to the Beatles, The Book of Mormon, or solo Jack White all under the same roof. Put it simply: The acts that perform here are usually world renowned and worth the ticket price.

Terrestrial radio can be a powerful medium for promoting your new release. Here are four steps to using your efforts wisely and achieving great air time!

Initially, musicians used 808s on their own as the kick. While you can definitely still do that, things have progressed. Nowadays, the subby 808s are most commonly found as a bass tone that’s been layered with a punchy kick sound. This punchier kick layer typically has less bass content and is there to help create a crisper attack. At its most basic, the kick and 808 play essentially the same pattern, but the 808 bass provides the sub and tonal content.

With all of Logic’s inredible instruments, producers often rely on the sound of the samples right out of the box, here’s how to make them more interesting.

We actually started from scratch! Victor and I are both music and vinyl lovers, but we always lived our passion in our private spheres. We had never worked in the music industry before and didn’t have many contacts in the music scene, to be honest. We had to build our own relations [and] convince and prove to some already well-established labels and institutions that our solution might interest them!

In a song known for its supremely catchy guitar riff (what else is new?), this is Hamilton’s moment of rising up to say, “Hey, don’t forget about the bass… it’s flashy, too!” The high run works particularly well juxtaposed against the lower notes he’s played up to that point in that section (which is basically the same riff as in the verses). Specifically, the vamping on C, then dropping down to the open E and walking up chromatically to the fifth below it (G), makes the shooting up to the next octave C and climbing up to the E above it sound really great together.

The groove may be simple, but its relationship to the song’s chord progression is not. Roland developed the RE-201 in the early 1970s, and while this wasn’t the first tape echo, they made something much more durable and sonically satisfying than anything that had come before it. Starting in the 1950s, musicians started to use small devices that included a recorder and a single tape loop capable of simultaneously recording and playing sound. This would create a delay effect.

One of the most unique mentions on this list goes to Rabbit Island, a 91-acre forested island made up of a native ecosystem that stands on solid bedrock and has never been developed or subdivided. It’s home to bald eagles nesting in the trees, lake trout and salmon in the water, and completely devoted to artists taking the time to “investigate and challenge creative practices in a wilderness environment.”

I have been improvising with instruments for 25 years now, in many different idioms: blues, rock, jazz, country, and various kinds of electronic music. Scratching is very different from playing an instrument. Intellectually scratching is something like playing loops in Ableton Live’s Session View, but it’s more like playing an instrument, while triggering loops is more like composing.
