Carla Malrowe is a singer, composer, keyboardist, writer, and music industry marketer from Johannesburg, South Africa. However, from an opposing perspective, we could also raise the following question: What’s the point of building technological tools that merely mimic what we’d otherwise be able to do manually, or at least through existing musical technology (i.e., instruments)? Instead we should be pushing the envelope and introducing tools into our learning practice that expand our potential for expression and leave preconceived boundaries behind. Or, we should be looking to change our educational curriculums to incorporate software that opens up new worlds for students to dive into.

So without further ado, here are five essential recommendations for the mixing engineer’s bookshelf.
“Girls Like You”: Chalk the most obvious hit of 2018 up to the number-one most popular chord change of all time (I V vi IV). This song rocked the Top 5 for almost half the year, even one more week than “God’s Plan.” First off, dig how the second post-chorus/refrain thing repeats itself, cooling it on the “yeah-yeah”s for what I’ll call a “double-post” section. And the bridge and half-chorus, with their odd lengths of nine and five bars respectively, are also worth a hearty mention.

It seems we can always turn to a popular old melody for some familiar sing-along action. The lyrics of this tune have a bit of an icky past, harking back to the American Civil War, but like most public domain songs to stand the test of time, the simplistic melody often reminds us of childhood. In “Shoo Fly, Don’t Bother Me” you’ll find the major third at 0:04, on the lyrics “Shoo” and “fly.”
Why? Often, a lack of empathy for the audiences that support us or the venues that host us is partly to blame. If you’re enthusiastically writing venues in your city but never getting responses, don’t get upset about it — just make an effort to think about the reasons why this could be the case. Are you targeting venues too large and established? Are your recorded demos not good enough to showcase your talent and sound, or do you not even have demos to begin with? (If so, you should rectify that.) Are you sure you’re not making any avoidable spelling, grammar, or colloquial linguistic errors in your booking emails?
Songwriters like me often draw from personal life and experience, or from the experiences of those around us; which is probably true of almost any writer in any literary format. But we may also get inspired by and invested in the characters in TV shows, films, and books as well. In fact, it is completely possible to get inspired by anything and everything in the world around you as a creative person. As long as you’re looking for it…
Charles Burchell is a multi-instrumentalist, producer, composer, educator, and diplomat from New Orleans, LA. He has studied at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, the New England Conservatory (B.M. ’12), and most recently completed the Masters of Arts in Education program at the Harvard Graduate School of Education (Ed. M ’13). Burchell has recorded and produced albums with Wes “Warmdaddy” Anderson, Delfayo Marsalis, Ran Blake, Ciel Rouge, his band The Love Experiment (featured in Touring on a Shoestring), and has performed and given master classes at various music festivals around the world. Burchell also works as a cultural diplomat with the Next Level Program and is currently a teaching artist for Carnegie Hall’s Digital Music Production Workshop and Musical Connections Program in which he works with court involved youth and students from various boroughs throughout New York City. Burchell continues to perform regularly around the U.S. and internationally as a DJ, drummer, and bandleader.
Open mics make lofty promises about what they’re able to offer songwriters of all levels. I’m here to tell you that they’re still a waste of your time.
